What to Look out For This Festive Season: Our Privacy, Our Security

Fellow Melanated Queens,

As this festive season unfolds, we know it is a time of joy, family, and celebration. But for us Melanated queens, it presents a sobering reality that defines how crucial it is for us to remember, that even amidst the merriment we indulge ourselves in, our safety remains a paramount concern. While we embrace the spirit of the season, we need to be on high alert and ensure we navigate through it with vigilance and awareness!

We can revel in the festivities while keeping a watchful eye, ensuring our safety and well-being by:

Trusting your instincts and intuition: Be mindful of your surroundings, whether at crowded events or walking alone, maintain situational awareness.  If a situation feels off, it probably is. If someone makes you uncomfortable, don't be afraid to say no or walk away. Don’t hesitate to remove yourself, seek help, or call a trusted friend. Your Voice is your weapon. Trust your instincts.

Stay informed and connected: Be in the know of potential dangers in your area, whether it’s pickpocketing, harassment, or assault. Awareness is power. If you must travel, inform your trusted friend(s) of family about your whereabouts and plans. Share your live location or activate “emergency contact sharing” features on your phone.

Limit alcohol consumption: I know we like to have some fun, but don’t let that fun impair your judgement and decision-making. Maintain control during the festivities and decrease your level of vulnerability.

Mind your social media: avoid posting or sharing information about your location, travel plans, or personal details publicly. I know for many gen Z’s this is like a nail in a coffin, but it’s for your own protection. Also, have strong passwords and be wary of emails or messages sent to you by people not in your directory of close friend, colleagues or family.

Carry a personal alarm: This is a small device, such as pepper spray, that can be a powerful deterrent and alert others in case there is danger. You can get it at any supermarket or online stores. You can never go wrong with added security.

Plan your transportation: decide beforehand how you will get home safely, especially after dark. Consider designated drivers, ride-sharing services, or public transportation options. Better yet, travel in groups or travel with trusted companions.

Remember, queens, you are strong, capable, and deserving of a safe and joyful celebration. By practicing these simple yet crucial safety measures, you can ensure your festive season is filled with cherished memories, free from worries and anxieties.
